Pre-Diwali Skin Prep: A 2-Week Plan for Indian Skin

Pre-Diwali skin care works best when it is calm, consistent and finished early. Two weeks is enough to settle dryness, clear surface dullness and calm irritation. It is not enough for new peels, bleach or three new serums, which are the usual causes of a reaction on puja day.

Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. If you are reading this on 27 October, you have 12 days, so join the plan below at Day 12 and follow it as written. Nothing here depends on starting on a particular date.

What two weeks can and cannot do

Skin renews gradually, so two weeks will not erase old marks or change your natural skin tone. What it can realistically do:

  • Reduce dryness and tightness. Dull skin before a festival is very often dehydrated skin, which improves within days of better cleansing and moisturising.

  • Smooth the surface. Gentle, limited exfoliation removes dead surface cells so skin takes makeup more evenly.

  • Settle irritation. If your skin has been reactive to the weather change, two calm weeks help it recover.

What it cannot do is lighten deep pigmentation, remove acne scars or clear active cystic acne. A consistent routine now helps over the following months, but be wary of anyone promising a transformation before an event. If pigmentation or persistent acne is your main worry, a dermatologist is the right first step.

The one rule: nothing new in the last 5 days; no facial, peel or bleach in the last week

From 3 November, add nothing new: no new product, no first-time facial, no peel, no laser session. From 1 November, avoid bleach and peels altogether. Skin that is freshly bleached or peeled is more sensitive to everything you apply afterwards, including makeup and sunscreen.

Two practical corollaries:

  1. Patch test early. Apply a small amount of any new product to the inner forearm or behind the ear for two days, at least a week before you want to use it. If you see redness, itching or swelling, do not use it on your face.

  2. Do hair removal early. Waxing and threading irritate skin. Do them at least three or four days before the day, not the day before.

Days 14 to 8, reset: gentle cleanse, moisturiser, daily sunscreen, one brightening step

This week is about getting the basics right. Keep the routine short enough that you will actually follow it.

Morning

  1. Cleanse with a gentle face wash. If you are not sure which suits your skin, see our guide to choosing a face wash (planned).

  2. Moisturise with a lightweight formula. Even oily skin needs this step.

  3. Apply sunscreen last.

Night

  1. Cleanse well, and double cleanse if you wore sunscreen or makeup. Our post on what belongs in a morning vs night routine explains why night cleansing has more work to do.

  2. Apply one treatment step, only if your skin already tolerates it.

  3. Moisturise.

Sunscreen, done properly. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, about a teaspoon for the face, applied roughly 15 minutes before going outside and reapplied every two hours when outdoors (AAD). Do not forget the neck and ears. Vellora does not currently sell a face sunscreen, so pick any product that meets those criteria and that you find comfortable enough to wear daily.

The one brightening step. Choose a single product and use it consistently, rather than stacking several. Radiglow Face Serum is one option, listing alpha arbutin, niacinamide, a vitamin C derivative and licorice on its page. Start every other night for the first three nights, then nightly if skin is comfortable. Our face serum collection has the rest of the range.

Moisturiser. Glow Moisturizer lists hyaluronic acid, ceramides, squalane and niacinamide, which suits most skin types as an everyday base. If your skin is dry or tight, the dry and dehydrated skin collection is the place to start.

Protect your sleep too: tired skin shows up quickly in photographs.

Days 7 to 4, brighten and hydrate: at most one gentle exfoliation; mist for dull skin

The festive week itself. Keep the same routine and make three adjustments.

Exfoliate once, at most. Choose one day around Day 6 (2 November) for a gentle exfoliation. If you use an exfoliating face wash such as GreLemo Face Wash, whose page lists a glycolic acid, follow the directions on the pack, and stop at the first sign of stinging. Do not exfoliate on consecutive days, and do not exfoliate at all in the 48 hours before the event.

Add a hydrating mist or toner. Dull skin responds to water more than to scrubbing. After cleansing, a hydrating toner adds a thin layer of humectants before moisturiser. Glow Face Toner lists glutathione, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, alpha arbutin and a vitamin C derivative. We explain how toners, mists and essences differ: face mist vs toner vs essence.

Start lip care. Apply lip balm morning and night from today. Lips cannot be fixed in an hour, and flaky lips are the first thing to show under lipstick.

Days 3 to 1, calm: nothing new; lips; body lotion for arms and neck

The final days are for maintenance. Keep it boring.

  • Stick to the same cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen you have used all week

  • Pause exfoliation, retinoids and strong acids

  • If skin feels even slightly sensitive, drop the serum for these three days

  • Apply body lotion to your arms, neck and chest if your outfit shows them. We cover this in detail in Festive Outfit Ready: Body, Neck and Lip Care (planned)

  • Keep lips moisturised, and avoid peeling flakes

On the night before, cleanse gently, moisturise and go to bed early. Skip any mask or treatment you have not already used this fortnight.

Festive day: prep under makeup, midday refresh, double cleanse at night

Morning. Cleanse, mist if you use one, moisturise and apply sunscreen if you will be outdoors in daylight. Wait about ten minutes before makeup so each layer can settle. Our guide to festive makeup prep and removal (planned) covers the order in detail.

Midday refresh. Blot oily areas with blotting paper rather than adding more powder, and use one or two light sprays of a water-based toner on dry skin.

Night. Remove everything. Start with a balm, oil or micellar water, then wash with a gentle face wash. Do not sleep in makeup, even after a late night. If your skin feels tired the next day, our 7-day post-Diwali reset (planned) gives a gentle plan.

Plan by skin type (table: oily, dry, acne-prone, sensitive)

Skin type

Focus this fortnight

Be careful with

Oily

Lightweight gel moisturiser, gentle cleansing twice a day

Over-washing, which can leave skin tight and make it look oilier. See our Aloeem Face Wash for oily and acne-prone skin

Dry

Richer moisturiser morning and night, hydrating toner, lukewarm water

Hot water, strong foaming cleansers, exfoliating more than once a week

Acne-prone

A simple routine, non-comedogenic products, daily sunscreen

New actives, squeezing spots, harsh scrubs. See the oily and acne-prone collection

Sensitive

Fewer products, patch tests, fragrance-free where possible

Any new product after Day 7, DIY face packs

A note on DIY face packs: turmeric, sandalwood and lemon are popular festive ingredients, but they can stain, sting or trigger allergic reactions. If you want to use them, patch test first and keep them out of the last week.

Mistakes to avoid:

  1. Last-minute facials or bleach. If skin reacts, you have no time to recover.

  2. Skipping sunscreen because it is November. UV exposure continues year-round. Read about everyday barrier mistakes for the full list.

  3. Ignoring pollution. Festival season adds smoke and dust. See how pollution affects your skin.

  4. Changing everything at once. If you must add something, add one thing, early.

Frequently asked questions

How early should I start skin care before Diwali? Two weeks gives consistency time to show, and it is the length this plan is built around. Even three or four days of better cleansing, moisturising and sunscreen helps, and the most important rule applies regardless of lead time: add nothing new in the last five days.

Can I get a facial just before Diwali? Ideally, book it at least a week before the event. A first-time facial in the last three days is risky for sensitive or acne-prone skin, because redness and breakouts can follow. If you want a facial, choose a salon you already trust and tell them about any actives you use.

What should I do if I get a pimple right before Diwali? Do not squeeze it. Keep your routine simple, avoid adding a strong spot treatment you have never used, and let makeup do the covering. If breakouts are painful, widespread or recurring, see a dermatologist.

Should I use a face pack or ubtan before Diwali? Only if you have used it before and your skin tolerates it. Turmeric, lemon and sandalwood packs can irritate, and turmeric can stain. Patch test at least a week ahead, and leave packs out of the final days.

Is sunscreen needed under festive makeup? Yes, in the daytime. Apply sunscreen before makeup, give it time to settle, and remove both properly at night.
